Clearing Up Misconceptions About Teeth Whitening

Published by Brian Homann DDS

It’s not unusual to want a beautiful smile that’s pearly white and perfect. The search for at-home teeth whitening methods has led to all kinds of experiments and theories. Some do help whiten teeth, and some only help improve oral health.

Does Coconut Oil Whiten Teeth?

Coconut oil is often the go-to oil used in something called “oil pulling,” a traditional remedy that has been practiced in India and parts of Southeast Asia for centuries.

Essentially, this involves swishing oil around in the mouth for 15-20 minutes in an attempt to pull all of the bad elements away from your teeth. There are currently no scientific studies proving this method whitens your teeth and acts as an agent against bad bacteria in the mouth. Because of this, coconut oil pulling is not recommended by the American Dental Association for teeth whitening or home dental care.

If you still wish to try this remedy, despite the lack of beneficial qualities or scientific evidence, please be mindful of any allergies or food sensitivities you already have. This method can possibly cause a contact dermatitis reaction.

Can Baking Soda Whiten Teeth?

There are many different claims that you can whiten teeth with baking soda, when it’s used in conjunction with other various ingredients. Because baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a mild abrasive, it can successfully remove superficial teeth stains when used with hydrogen peroxide on a regular basis. It is not effective, however, when used with water or lemon juice, and does not permanently change the actual color of teeth.

Does Fluoride Whiten Teeth?

Fluoride goes a long way in improving dental health and preventing tooth decay, however, it does not whiten teeth. In fact, when used in excessive amounts for prolonged periods of time, fluoride treatments can actually cause teeth to darken or develop brown spotted stains. Therefore, while fluoride can be beneficial for your teeth, you should always be mindful of the amount of fluoride you’re using in an attempt to whiten your teeth.

To keep your teeth bright and healthy looking, you should focus on brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis with regular toothpaste.

Are Teeth Supposed to Be White?

The natural color of teeth are determined by numerous factors, including genetics and health.

Most people do not naturally have bright white teeth but rather they typically range in off-white to yellow teeth. Medical conditions and medications can affect the color of teeth, regardless of how good a dental care routine might be. Other factors include diet and lifestyle habits like the use of tobacco products.

Most caring dental staff I’ve ever encountered. Every experience has been extremely professional, from just calling to ask a question to cleanings for my whole family and beyond.

Dr. Homann goes out of his way to make sure you understand each step of the process and are comfortable the whole way. Each member of their team genuinely cares about their patients, and knowing I will have the best care every time I walk in the door makes going to the dentist a whole lot easier. Thank you to all the kind and wonderful staff, you make all the difference.

Dr. Homan is the best dentist I've ever been to. Most of my co-workers go to Dr. Homan and that's how I heard about him.

I needed a lot of work on my teeth and I'm so glad I found such a great dentist. He explains everything to you and also is very upfront on all posibiltys that's can happen to the tooth he works on and also explains what you can expect after the dental work. He's also very friendly and everyone at the office makes you feel comfortable. Karen and Sandra in the front office are wonderful as well. They also have wonderful dental hygienist. My insurance is not in network with Dr. Homan but it's well worth the extra money to still go to the best!

Dr. Homann's practice is very clean and up to date. His practice also has televisions to watch when you are getting your teeth cleaned or any other work done which is awesome!

The chairs are very comfortable and the staff is very polite. Dr. Homann is also a very knowledgeable dentist with the ability to make every patient feel calm and comfortable no matter what the situation. He also has done volunteer work for the homeless donating his time and resources to help the less fortunate, if that doesn't let you know what kind of practice this is I don't know what will. I will definitely be coming back here again!
