What causes snoring and sleep apnea?

Although it is usually audible and disruptive, people with sleep apnea do not always make noise. This is especially dangerous because those with the affliction may still lack proper oxygen intake, but since they do not make noise their sleep apnea may go undiagnosed. It is possible for cases of sleep apnea to go undiagnosed for far too long.
