At our dental office, we like to stay up-to-date on the latest dental technologies to ensure that our patients are getting the highest level of treatment we can offer. One of our office’s most recent tools is the DEXIS Carivu™ Caries Detection Device. This device helps our dentist find and treat dental caries in a patient’s tooth earlier and more accurately than ever before! Diagnosing a problem early on can lead to more conservative treatment and can potentially help avoid more costly treatment in the future.
What are dental caries?
Dental caries are another name for cavities. These are small holes in teeth that are the result of tooth decay. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria or plaque that eats away at a tooth over time. Plaque grows when sugars and food sit on the teeth for extended periods of time. The bacteria that eats away at teeth is usually the result of poor oral hygiene. You don’t always know whether you have dental caries or not because there are often no symptoms. When symptoms do develop, they may include a toothache, which can lead to infection, and even tooth loss.
How does Carivu™ help find caries?
Carivu™ identifies dental caries by using near-infrared light that makes enamel appear transparent. Any dental caries in a tooth will catch the light and absorb it, making them very obvious in contrast to the rest of the tooth. This is an unprecedented technique for finding cavities in a patient’s teeth. It helps detect caries with incredible accuracy, and can help catch them in their earliest stages.
What does this mean for patients?
This means that patients can have the confidence knowing that their dentist has the ability to visualize problems (caries) earlier than ever before. There are also certain instances where the Carivu™ can be used instead of additional x-rays, which lowers the patient’s radiation exposure. Carivu™ is safe, comfortable, and effective. For example, the Carivu™ can be used to help diagnose issues in a pregnant mother without the use of any x-ray radiation!
How can I prevent dental caries?
Preventing dental caries, or cavities, means keeping up with good oral hygiene habits. Brush twice a day and remember to floss. Stay away from sugary drinks and snacks, and remember to eat acidic foods in moderation. Good nutrition helps keep your mouth and teeth healthy along with the rest of your body. Make sure to visit Brian Homann, DDS at least every six months for a check-up and see how Carivu™ can help enhance your dental exam and speed up your appointment!
