Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Elk Grove Village IL

No one ever expects dental emergencies to happen, but when they do it can be difficult to know what to do next.

If you’re dealing with a situation involving severe tooth pain, a gum infection, or a dislodged crown, then it’s time to seek emergency dental care near Elk Grove Village.

How Does A Person Know They Are Experiencing A Dental Emergency?

There are several types of dental emergencies that a person can experience. Recognizing a dental emergency can be crucial in seeking prompt care from a dental clinic that offers it. Here are some signs that indicate a person may be experiencing a dental emergency:

  1. Severe Tooth Pain: Persistent and intense tooth pain, especially if it interferes with daily activities or sleep, could be a sign of an emergency.
  2. Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth has been completely knocked out of its socket, immediate dental attention is necessary. Time is crucial in attempting to save the tooth.
  3. Fractured or Broken Tooth: A tooth that is visibly cracked, fractured, or broken should be treated as an emergency. This is important to prevent further damage and potential infection.
  4. Excessive Bleeding: Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth, gums, or tongue may indicate an emergency. Applying gentle pressure with clean gauze or cloth can help control the bleeding temporarily while seeking dental care.
  5. Swelling or Abscess: Facial swelling, particularly when accompanied by pain, could be a sign of an infection or abscess. These conditions require immediate attention to prevent further complications.
  6. Lost Filling or Crown: If a dental filling or crown becomes dislodged or falls out, it may expose the underlying tooth, causing pain and sensitivity. Prompt dental care is necessary to prevent further damage.
  7. Unexplained Jaw Pain or Lockjaw: Severe jaw pain or the inability to open or close the mouth properly may indicate a dental emergency, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling or difficulty breathing.
  8. Trauma to the Mouth: Any injury to the teeth, gums, or mouth resulting from accidents or sports-related activities should be considered a dental emergency and evaluated by a dentist.

If you cannot find a local dentist that offers emergency dental services in their practice, you should visit your local emergency room instead.

Addressing Your Emergency With Brian Homann, DDS

When experiencing a dental emergency, it’s important to take swift action to ensure prompt and appropriate care. Here are the steps a person should take when facing a dental emergency:

  1. Assess the Situation: Evaluate the severity of the dental emergency. Determine if it requires immediate attention or if it can be managed until regular dental office hours.
  1. Contact Brian Homann, DDS: Our Elk Grove Village practice offers several appointment times specifically for dental emergencies.
  1. Explain the Situation: When contacting our dental practice, clearly describe the dental emergency and the symptoms you’re experiencing. Provide details such as severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or any other relevant information. This will help our dental staff understand the urgency and prepare for your arrival.
  1. Follow the Guidance: While you wait or are in transit to the office, we will provide instructions based on your specific situation. Our staff may advise you to come to the office immediately or provide temporary self-care instructions until you can be seen.
  1. Manage Pain and Discomfort: While waiting for dental care, you may be able to take over-the-counter pain relievers (such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen) as directed to help manage pain. Applying a cold compress to the affected area can also help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.
  1. Preserve Dislodged Teeth or Restorations: If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it carefully by the crown (top) and avoid touching the root. If possible, try to gently place the tooth back into its socket without forcing it. If this isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or saliva and bring it to the dental practice. Similarly, if a filling or crown comes loose, keep it and bring it to the dental appointment.
  1. Arrive at the Dental Practice: Make your way to Brian Homann DDS as soon as possible. If necessary, ask someone to accompany you or arrange for transportation, especially if you’re in significant pain or discomfort.

Remember, in a dental emergency, time is of the essence. Prioritizing prompt communication with us in addition to following care instructions will help ensure you receive the necessary help as quickly as possible.

If you’re experiencing any of the common dental emergencies listed above or have symptoms relating to one of these dental problems, please contact us promptly. Our staff with Brian Homann DDS is always ready to schedule an appointment to diagnose and treat your emergency immediately.

Most caring dental staff I’ve ever encountered. Every experience has been extremely professional, from just calling to ask a question to cleanings for my whole family and beyond.

Dr. Homann goes out of his way to make sure you understand each step of the process and are comfortable the whole way. Each member of their team genuinely cares about their patients, and knowing I will have the best care every time I walk in the door makes going to the dentist a whole lot easier. Thank you to all the kind and wonderful staff, you make all the difference.

Dr. Homan is the best dentist I've ever been to. Most of my co-workers go to Dr. Homan and that's how I heard about him.

I needed a lot of work on my teeth and I'm so glad I found such a great dentist. He explains everything to you and also is very upfront on all posibiltys that's can happen to the tooth he works on and also explains what you can expect after the dental work. He's also very friendly and everyone at the office makes you feel comfortable. Karen and Sandra in the front office are wonderful as well. They also have wonderful dental hygienist. My insurance is not in network with Dr. Homan but it's well worth the extra money to still go to the best!

Dr. Homann's practice is very clean and up to date. His practice also has televisions to watch when you are getting your teeth cleaned or any other work done which is awesome!

The chairs are very comfortable and the staff is very polite. Dr. Homann is also a very knowledgeable dentist with the ability to make every patient feel calm and comfortable no matter what the situation. He also has done volunteer work for the homeless donating his time and resources to help the less fortunate, if that doesn't let you know what kind of practice this is I don't know what will. I will definitely be coming back here again!
