Compassionate Care – Schaumburg Dental Implants

Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Elk Grove Village IL

In today’s dentistry, dental implants offer a highly effective solution for replacing one or more missing teeth. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, typically made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or bridge. It fuses with the bone over time in a process called osseointegration, providing a sturdy foundation for the artificial tooth.

Dental implants are a popular and effective long-term solution for people who have lost teeth caused by injury, periodontal disease, or other reasons.

Are You A Candidate for Dental Implants?

Several factors are considered when determining if you’re a candidate for dental implants. Generally, you need to have healthy gums and enough bone in your jaw to hold the implant. Good overall health is important, as some conditions like diabetes or heart disease might affect healing.

Age isn’t usually a barrier – adults of any age can get implants. However, children’s jaws need to finish growing first. You should also be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.

Smoking can lower the success rate of implants, so quitting is advised. If you’ve lost bone in your jaw, you might need a bone graft before getting an implant.

The Dental Implant Procedure Explained

When you schedule your initial appointment at our office, Dr. Homann will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and review your medical history to decide if implants are right for you. Even if you’re not an ideal candidate right away, he may suggest ways to improve your eligibility.

If you’re approved for implants, here’s what you can expect:

  • Preparation (if needed): Some patients might need a bone graft or tooth extraction first. These procedures can take 3-6 months to heal before moving forward.
  • Implant placement: The dentist will cut open your gum and drill a hole in the jawbone. The implant post is placed deep into this hole. This surgery takes 1-2 hours per implant. You’ll wait 3-6 months for the implant to fuse with your bone.
  • Abutment placement: Once your implant has bonded with the bone, the dentist attaches a small connector piece called an abutment. This minor surgery takes about an hour, and your gums will need 1-2 weeks to heal.
  • Crown placement: After your gums heal, the dentist makes molds of your mouth. These are used to create your new artificial tooth (crown). Fitting the crown takes 1-2 appointments over a couple of weeks.
  • Follow-up care: In the weeks after getting your new tooth, you’ll have a few check-ups. Your dentist will make sure everything is healing well and the implant is working properly.
  • Long-term care: Treat your implant like a natural tooth. Brush, floss, and have regular dental check-ups. With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.

The entire dental implant process usually takes about 5-9 months. However, every patient is different, and your dentist will give you a more specific timeline based on your individual needs.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several important benefits for those seeking to replace missing teeth:

  • Natural appearance and function: Implants look, feel, and work just like natural teeth.
  • Improved speech: Unlike ill-fitting dentures, implants allow you to speak without worry.
  • Easier eating: Implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence.
  • Better oral health: Unlike bridges, implants don’t require reducing other teeth, preserving more of your natural tooth structure.
  • Durability: With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.
  • Convenience: You don’t need to remove implants for cleaning or use messy adhesives to keep them in place.
  • Bone preservation: Implants help prevent bone loss in the jaw that often occurs with missing teeth.
  • Improved self-esteem: Implants can restore your smile and help you feel better about your appearance.

How Long Do Implants Last?

Dental implants are considered a permanent solution for missing teeth, and with proper home care, the implant and the crown/abutment may last for decades. However, either could need further treatment if any issues develop.

It’s essential to remember that regular dental check-ups and good home oral hygiene can significantly extend the implant and crown’s lifespan.

Dr. Homan is the best dentist I've ever been to. Most of my co-workers go to Dr. Homan and that's how I heard about him.

I needed a lot of work on my teeth and I'm so glad I found such a great dentist. He explains everything to you and also is very upfront on all posibiltys that's can happen to the tooth he works on and also explains what you can expect after the dental work. He's also very friendly and everyone at the office makes you feel comfortable. Karen and Sandra in the front office are wonderful as well. They also have wonderful dental hygienist. My insurance is not in network with Dr. Homan but it's well worth the extra money to still go to the best!

Dr. Homann's practice is very clean and up to date. His practice also has televisions to watch when you are getting your teeth cleaned or any other work done which is awesome!

The chairs are very comfortable and the staff is very polite. Dr. Homann is also a very knowledgeable dentist with the ability to make every patient feel calm and comfortable no matter what the situation. He also has done volunteer work for the homeless donating his time and resources to help the less fortunate, if that doesn't let you know what kind of practice this is I don't know what will. I will definitely be coming back here again!
