What are dental crowns (caps)?
Dr. Brian Homann may suggest a dental crown (cap) to treat moderate-to-severe tooth decay or damage. A dental crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped cover that is placed over a damaged tooth, completely encasing it up the gum line. This will help to restore your smile, so you won’t be afraid to flash your pearly whites. Dental crowns are especially useful for:
- Holding a broken tooth together
- Preventing a weakened tooth from breaking
- Repairing extensive tooth decay and damage
- Enhancing the natural appearance of your smile
- Anchoring a dental bridge
- Completing a dental implant
We offer high-quality dental crowns in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, to restore the shape, function, and appearance of your smile. It’s our goal to make sure you have the best help you obtain optimum dental health possible, and to help you keeping your natural teeth for as long as possible.
How are dental crowns (caps) made?
Each dental crown is custom made to perfectly fit the damaged tooth. It generally takes two visits to our dental office to make and apply a dental crown. During your first appointment, we will reshape your tooth, so the dental crown will fit properly, take impressions of the tooth, and send the impressions to a high-tech dental laboratory where your dental crown will be made. We will place a temporary crown over your tooth while waiting for the permanent crown. During your second appointment, Dr. Brian Homann makes sure the dental crown fits properly. He will then cement it into place.
Why do you need dental crowns?
When there are small cavities in a tooth, our dental professionals will typically use fillings to restore the integrity of the tooth. However, when there are larger areas of decay or a portion of the tooth is missing, we may suggest dental crowns to help. It’s our goal to salvage your natural teeth as often as possible, reducing the need for costly replacement options that may not last a lifetime. We will typically recommend a dental crown if we feel the use of a dental crown will most ideally maintain the integrity and aesthetics of your tooth, we will typically move forward with this treatment option.
What are the benefits of dental crowns?
Dental crowns can provide you with a number of benefits over extraction of the tooth. While crowns may eventually fail and need to be replaced in the future, they typically last for many years as long as you give them the proper maintenance and continue to see us a dentist regularly. In addition, it is always best to keep your natural teeth as long as you can. Despite advancements in the dental field, a natural tooth is generally the most life-like feeling of all of the options.
