Dentist for Sleep Apnea & Airway Issues

Do sleepless nights and long days of exhaustion feel like a never-ending cycle? Many people experience chronic fatigue from snoring, choking, mouth breathing, or struggling to breathe comfortably at night. These symptoms may be related to sleep apnea or other airway concerns.

At Brian Homann, DDS, we provide airway and sleep apnea dentistry to help patients identify and address breathing-related issues that may affect sleep, overall health, and quality of life. Our team works with both adults and children to evaluate airway concerns and provide treatment options when appropriate.

Dr. Brian Homann is a general dentist who offers custom oral appliances to help manage sleep-related breathing disorders. We also provide airway-focused evaluations that look at factors affecting breathing during sleep and daily activities. If your physician has diagnosed you with sleep apnea or if you have concerns about airway health, contact our dental office to schedule a consultation.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops and starts during sleep. These pauses in breathing can cause snoring, gasping, shallow breaths, or frequent waking. Many people with sleep apnea feel tired during the day because they don’t get restful sleep at night.

Some people with sleep apnea may not snore or even remember waking up, so the condition can go unnoticed for years. Left untreated, sleep apnea can affect your health and quality of life.

What Is Airway Dentistry?

Airway dentistry focuses on how the mouth, jaw, tongue, and surrounding structures affect breathing. A restricted airway can contribute to issues such as snoring, mouth breathing, poor sleep quality, and obstructive sleep apnea.

An airway dentist evaluates factors that may interfere with healthy breathing patterns. In some cases, concerns involving the airway can affect both sleep and overall wellness. Identifying these issues early may help patients find appropriate treatment options and improve their quality of life.

Dr. Brian Homann is an AADSM-qualified dentist, a designation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. This designation recognizes dentists who have completed education in dental sleep medicine and oral appliance therapy for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

At Brian Homann, DDS, as a sleep apnea dentist, we take a comprehensive approach to airway and sleep apnea dentistry. We help patients better understand how oral structures may contribute to breathing and sleep concerns.

What Sleep Apnea Treatments Are Available?

Your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes for mild sleep apnea, such as sleeping on your side, losing weight, or quitting smoking. For more moderate or severe cases, the standard treatment is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. This machine pushes air through a mask to keep your airway open while you sleep.

CPAP machines aren’t for everyone and can be hard to use. Many patients find them uncomfortable or difficult to sleep with. That’s where oral appliances may be helpful.

Oral appliances for sleep apnea are small, custom-made devices. They are worn in the mouth while you sleep and are often easier to adjust to than a CPAP machine.

If you’re looking for an alternative to CPAP, our dentist may be able to help. At Brian Homann, DDS, we offer treatments for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

Sleep apnea can affect people in different ways. Some symptoms are easy to notice, while others may be more subtle. Common signs of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud or frequent snoring
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Feeling tired during the day, even after a full night’s sleep
  • A sore throat or dry mouth when you first wake up
  • Morning headaches
  • Trouble focusing or remembering things
  • High blood pressure
  • Mood changes or irritability

The effects of untreated sleep apnea can be severe. If you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor. If diagnosed with OSA, you may benefit from a dental appliance to support your treatment.

Why Do I Snore?

Snoring is caused by improper breathing during sleep, which causes soft tissues in the throat to vibrate. It can be loud, disruptive, and affect both your sleep and your partner’s. While snoring doesn’t always mean you have sleep apnea, it can be a sign of a sleep-related breathing issue.

Snoring Treatment With Dental Appliances

Brian Homann, DDS, offers anti-snoring devices that are small, plastic, and worn like a mouthguard. These appliances gently move the jaw forward to help keep your airway open. Many patients find these appliances easier to use than other treatments and report improved sleep quality.

Our goal is to help you sleep more soundly and quietly with a solution that’s comfortable and easy to wear. If you’re embarrassed by loud snoring at night, we encourage you to contact our dental office for more information about our treatments.

Airway Treatment for Children & Adults

The development of the jaws, dental arches, and airway is closely connected. When the upper jaw and palate do not develop with enough width, there may be less room for the teeth, tongue, and nasal passages. This can cause issues like mouth breathing, crowded teeth, snoring, poor sleep, and airway obstruction.

For children, airway-focused treatment may help support healthy growth and development. Early evaluation allows our team to identify potential concerns and determine whether treatment may be beneficial.

Depending on a child’s needs, airway treatment may include options such as orthopedic expansion, Invisalign®, ALF therapy, or Myobrace® appliances. These approaches focus on creating adequate space for the teeth, tongue, and airway while supporting proper oral development.

Pediatric Airway Evaluations

Our on-site pediatric airway dentist serving Elk Grove Village can evaluate your child’s oral development and airway health. Some signs that may point to an airway concern in children include:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Frequent snoring
  • Dry or chapped lips
  • Inflamed gum tissue
  • Restless sleep
  • Teeth grinding
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Bed wetting
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Crowded teeth or narrow dental arches
  • Tongue or upper lip tie
  • Chronic allergies or ear infections
  • Dental crossbite or anterior open bite

Early identification of airway concerns may help families better understand potential contributing factors and determine what treatment is appropriate.

Adult Airway Dentistry Options

Adults can also experience airway-related concerns. Common symptoms may include snoring, OSA, chronic mouth breathing, difficulty staying asleep, and daytime fatigue. In some cases, treatment may involve oral appliances, expansion therapies, or referrals for additional care when appropriate.

Our team evaluates each patient individually to better understand the underlying causes of airway restrictions. Advanced imaging and comprehensive exams help us determine whether airway-focused treatment may improve breathing, sleep quality, and oral function.

Dr. Homan is the best dentist I've ever been to. Most of my co-workers go to Dr. Homan and that's how I heard about him.

I needed a lot of work on my teeth and I'm so glad I found such a great dentist. He explains everything to you and also is very upfront on all posibiltys that's can happen to the tooth he works on and also explains what you can expect after the dental work. He's also very friendly and everyone at the office makes you feel comfortable. Karen and Sandra in the front office are wonderful as well. They also have wonderful dental hygienist. My insurance is not in network with Dr. Homan but it's well worth the extra money to still go to the best!

Dr. Homann's practice is very clean and up to date. His practice also has televisions to watch when you are getting your teeth cleaned or any other work done which is awesome!

The chairs are very comfortable and the staff is very polite. Dr. Homann is also a very knowledgeable dentist with the ability to make every patient feel calm and comfortable no matter what the situation. He also has done volunteer work for the homeless donating his time and resources to help the less fortunate, if that doesn't let you know what kind of practice this is I don't know what will. I will definitely be coming back here again!
