What is preventive dentistry?
While we strive to treat all tooth decay and damage with great skill and compassion, our goal is to prevent serious dental conditions from occurring. The more you do to take care of your smile before you experience problems, the fewer issues are likely to show up in the future. We provide a number of preventive treatments to help us achieve this goal. These services include:
- Detailed instructions about good oral hygiene at home, including proper brushing and flossing
- Techniques and recommended dental products
- Tips for maintaining a healthy, balanced diet
- Fluoride treatments
- Routine dental cleanings and dental exams
- Comprehensive dental X-rays
- Oral cancer and gum disease screenings
Our caring dental team is passionate about taking care of your smile, and we want to help you love it as much as we do. We take the time to listen to you and all you have to say. We hope that when you visit our office, you feel comfortable voicing your questions and concerns. With Dr. Brian Homann leading the way, we will work together with you to provide a unified front against tooth decay.
What should you expect?
When it comes to preventive dentistry, there are a few things you can expect to experience. All of your check-up appointments will typically consist of a dental cleaning, along with a visual examination of your mouth to check for any developing problems. This includes an oral cancer screening that looks for any changes that have taken place since your last visit. The earlier a tooth-related problem is identified, the easier and less expensive it will be to fix. In addition to your regular cleaning and examination, we will perform x-rays on a regular basis to help identify cavities in their early stages, so they are much easier to fix with simple fillings rather than having to resort to more extensive treatment options.
How often should you visit?
The biggest question individuals have about preventive dentistry is how often they should visit the dentist for proper care. For most patients, we recommend coming in every six months to get your regular cleanings. At this point, we will determine how often you should have x-rays done to monitor the overall health of your teeth and the supporting bone structure. However, if you are currently going through dental problems, such as gingivitis or periodontal disease, you may need to have more frequent appointments to keep your overall oral health in good condition.
