Each year, the American Dental Association picks a different theme for National Dental Hygiene Month. The theme for 2018 focuses on four routines that play a critical part in your overall oral health, including brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing. Here is more information regarding these four routines.
Brushing
Unless otherwise noted by our dentist near Wood Dale, you should be using a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently move it back and forth in tooth-wide strokes. Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the insides, outsides and chewing surfaces. Last, but not least, don’t forget about brushing your tongue! It can harbor bacteria in your mouth that can be removed with your toothbrush.
Flossing
Another important facet of your oral health is flossing your teeth. Flossing allows you to reach bacteria and plaque that brushing cannot. Aim to floss your teeth at least once per day.
Rinsing and Chewing
